Abstract

"First, the level of distress and emotional activation become more severe over time; indeed, there seems to be a fairly direct linkage between overt expression and inner feelings of distress. ... The presence of a person who is loved and trusted appears to have a marked impact on the intensity of the various responses indicating pain and emotional distress."
