SUSTAINABILITY OF THE MINERAL INDUSTRY OF MUNICIPALITY OF PEDRA LAVRADA-PB: A STUDY FROM THE USE OF ISM-SUSTAINABILITY INDEX OF MINING

Abstract

The objective in this research is to analyze the level of sustainability of the mineral industry of municipality of Pedra Lavrada-Pb, from of Mining Sustainabilty Index-MSI, proposed by Viana(2012), with the use of indicators in the economical, social and environmental dimensions , with monitoring in three companies of higher mining representativity to city, as well as communities analyzing perception around. The research developed was of nature exploratory and descriptive, of nature qualitative-quantity, it is guided beneath the method of study of case, Field research and observation non-participant. How results it was verified that MSI of mineral activity in Pedra Lavrada achieved the index of 0,38 that classifies like unsustainable. Some companies, however, got to stay above of average, however , it presents like unsustainable, in three dimensions. In spite of importance of activity to municipality, there are not actions that provide the development in this activity on precepts of sustainability.
