Abstract

Italy is portrayed in all its spatial diversity and the attempts at promoting national economic unity over the past century. North and South are contrasted, together with the emergence of "middle Italy'. The notion of the four Italies is explored: the urbanized NW, the NE, middle Italy, and the underdeveloped islands and peninsulas of the South. Major urban centres (Milan, Turin, Genoa, Rome, Naples) are discussed in detail. -H.Clout
