Brazil is a country with substantial biodiversity, despite well-documented failures of environmental management. Its creative approaches to preserving biodiversity are less well known and will be covered in this chapter. These include the concepts of extractive reserves and multi-scaled environmental protection networks. International actors have often been crucial supports for these efforts, but their success depends on strong domestic partners, including an increasingly important judicial system.
