Abstract

The iron-magnesium system exhibits extensive miscibility gaps in the solid and liquid states. The determination of the phase boundaries boils down therefore to one of the mutual solubilities. After melting iron with only 0.057 wt.% C in the presence of magnesium at l,600{\textdegree}C under 25 bar of argon, Levchenko et al. [1] found a content of ca. 0.2 at.% Mg in the cooled sample. Taking this as the `real' solubility, one may derive its temperature dependence using an empirical relationship suggested by Kubaschewski [2]: $$\mathop {\overline H }olimits_i = 3,400\mathop {\overline S }olimits_i^E (K)$$
