Abstract

The environmental problem has been studied for several decades, where it has been sought to address and resolve the problem of the deterioration of life on earth. The objective of this research is to analyze how citizen participation contributes to sustainability and the construction of citizenship. The methodology was used based on the qualitative research paradigm, with a descriptive and exploratory analysis that uses documentary sources from a hermeneutical historical approach. The results indicate that citizens participate in decision-making processes, although these are diverse and include a multitude of options, recognized and unrecognized, formal and informal, at different levels, influential or not, with different possibilities. It is concluded that these actions can be strengthened, enable and mobilize citizens for greater participation, consolidate institutions to provide the necessary spaces for participation.
