Abstract

In the current era of minimally invasive surgery, a thorough understanding of laparoscopic equipment is equally as important as technical laparoscopic skills. Successful laparoscopic surgery requires competence with specialized equipment and devices in conjunction with a cognitive understanding of patient selection and operative strategy in order to achieve ideal outcomes. The surgeon must be capable of managing intraoperative complications specific to laparoscopic surgery. This chapter details the fundamental principles and basic techniques that form the foundation of laparoscopic surgery and allow understanding of subsequent technical laparoscopic chapters.
