In tree-based Genetic Programming, subtrees whichrepresent potentially useful sub-solutions can beencapsulated in order to protect them and aid theirproliferation throughout the population. This paperinvestigates implementing this as a multi-run method. Atwo-stage encapsulation scheme based on subtreesurvival and frequency is compared againstAutomatically Defined Functions in fixed and evolvedarchitectures and standard Genetic Programming forsolving a Parity problem.
