Water Security, Disasters, and Risk Assessment

Abstract

Water security means having secure water systems, being safe from floods and droughts, and being protected from disruptions and sabotage of water systems. As a connector, water is essential for food security, environmental security, economic security, and health security, among others. The main process to plan for water security is risk assessment, which includes hazard identification, vulnerability assessment, and impact analysis. Hazards are classified as natural or human-caused, such as flooding or accidents. Dam safety is a high-priority security issue. Risk assessment process takes into account the possibility of these threats and their consequences to identify the highest-priority scenarios.
