Abstract

We report measurements of the sound velocity and elasticity for single-crystal San Carlos olivine to 32 GPa and polycrystalline ice VII to 40 GPa. For San Carlos olivine single crystals, We performed both Brillouiln scattering and X-ray diffraction measurements at each pressure to obtam independendy the equation of state and elasticity. The absolute pressure P can be calculated from thermodynamic relations and compared with the ruby pressure scale. In an experiment on polycrystalUne ice VII, we demonstrate that Brillouin scattering can be used for elastic constant measurements on polycrystalline materials as well as on single crystals. © 1998, The Japan Society of High Pressure Science and Technology.
