Abstract

Traditionally, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, together with the chromaffin cells of the paraganglia and adrenal medulla are considered to comprise the autonomic nervous system. Other cells and structures should perhaps be included, both on embryological and functional ground for example the glomus cells of the arterial chemoreceptors.
