We present the performances of a polycrystalline diamond detector with surface graphite electrodes when irradiated by a beta source. The results are compared with those obtained with a similar diamond detector equipped with standard Ti-Au electrodes. Both the test apparatus for signal acquisition and the laser system for the graphite electrodes are described. The quite good results open the way to a smart technique for diamond electrodes which can fit several issues as those of the CHIPSODIA R&D program here shortly outlined. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.
