The value of examining the three-dimensional structures of the human body using the Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) scan has long been used in medicine. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) uses a variation of this x-ray imaging technique, but at a much lower radiation dosage than conventional medical CT's. CBCT is a tomographic scanning technology that can scan and acquire a specified volume of the patient's head and generate a 3D data set at much lower radiation doses than their medical CT counterparts. Images taken with CBCT technology are easy to understand and accurately represent the patient's craniofacial structures. Applications include 3D imaging for implants, location of anatomical structures and pathology, temporomandibular joint imaging, impacted teeth and airway analysis.
