Abstract

This paper focuses on infant and child mortality in urban areas of Kenya. We construct a duration model framework to capture socio-economic and environmental characteristics. The model is to be estimated using the Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) The estimation results are expected to show that socio-economic and environmental characteristics have significantly different impacts on mortality rates at different ages. We will use the estimated model for policy experiments by simulating the magnitude of child mortality reduction as a result of environmental improvement, particularly reduction in indoor air pollution due to dirty cooking fuels, provision of safe drinking water and sanitation.
