The Late Carboniferous and Early Permian were times of active orogeny. Large volumes of terrigenous material were removed from newly formed, quickly growing mountain chains and were redistributed in patterns controlled by the complex bottom relief of the huge Preduralian trough. Complicated paleotectonie and sedimentary conditions brought into being an exceedingly diverse set of oryctocoenoses, abruptly changing stratal thicknesses as well as causing variable compositions of faunal assemblages.
