Abstract

Facilities are gradually becoming available for general practitioners to perform chemical screening; they will be able to benefit from the experience gained in hospital studies. It is important to realize the potential and limitations of such tests. They can in no way replace the clinical examination and the results are only of value if acted on by the doctor. The tests frequently lead to more frequent attendance by the patient for subsequent follow up and treatment. The aim of such techniques is better patient care, but the extent to which this can occur is not yet very fully evaluated.
