Abstract

Gamma and alpha alumina powders having an average particle size of 9. 6nm and 20nm respectively were sintered isothermally and at constant heating rates. With increase in heating rate, the gamma-alpha phase change occurred at higher temperatures, and densification of pellets originally made of gamma powder was enhanced. Pellets made of alpha powder were not sensitive to change in heating rates. Initial densification was interpreted in terms of Coble creep and grain boundary diffusion of oxygen. Refs.
