Even though it is often classified as a single migration category, family-related migration is a highly heterogeneous phenomenon, which might account for part of the difficulties of coming to terms with it empirically. It includes minors, spouses and other relatives, who join citizens or foreign national residents who are either of the same or a different ethnicity as the incoming family members. It includes children of migrants as well as foreign parents of minor citizens.
