In this work a conceptual analysis of distributed generation, microgrids and smart grids, where the importance of these is exposed to restructure the current energy scheme where centralized power generation based oil consumption, inefficient and polluting the atmosphere prevails offered. an assessment of the solar potential of the province of Manabí is performed and especially the city of Portoviejo, where the data allow us to evaluate the possibility of their use by introducing photovoltaic systems in distributed generation mode are set. Index Terms— Microgrids, smart grids, centralized generation, sustainability
