Carbohydrate is one kind of raw materials available in large scale, and they are also important renewable resources for industry. Their oxidation products have many applications in different fields. In this paper, biotransformation of L-rhamnose using Pseudomonas taetrolens resting cells was investigated, and the product was separated and indentified to be L-rhamnonic acid by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and NMR. P. taetrolens capable of transforming L-rhamnose to L-rhamnonic acid was reported for the first time. The influence of temperature, cell density and shaker speed on L-rhamnonic acid production from L-rhamnose by P. taetrolens was also investigated, and the final production rate reached 90% when the transformation was carried out for about 48 h under the condition of temperature 37 °C, cell concentration, OD600 = 40 and 180 rpm.
