Abstract

The ongoing integration of advanced wireless communication technologies in the automotive sector is expected to radically transform current transport systems into fully automated and inter-connected systems by enabling a large number of interactions among various network entities, e.g., vehicles, road users, roadside infrastructure. The ubiquitous vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication paves the way for vehicles to be a part of the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. In the context of automotive IoT systems, this chapter provides an overview of the existing developments of wireless technologies for V2X connectivity, focusing primarily on the application and benefits of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in road vehicles. Representative V2X use cases are further presented along with their respective performance requirements. An extensive discussion on the main V2X radio technologies, i.e., IEEE 802.11p-and cellular-based, follows, and the V2X standardization developments to date are highlighted. Research challenges and opportunities for future ITS communication constitute also part of this chapter where the main limitations of existing technologies are pointed out along with directions for future research in the field.
