Abstract
Erysipelas is a distinctive type of superficial cellulitis of the skin with prominent lymphatic involvement. It is usually caused by beta-haemolytic group A streptococci (GAS). It is characterized by painful lesion, mostly on the lower extremities. It has bright red oedematous, indurated appearance and an advancing, raised border that is sharply demarcated from the adjacent normal skin. The affected area is hot, tender and painful to palpation and may burn. Oral or parenteral penicillin is the treatment of choice.
