This paper presents an evaluation framework for examining the use and utility of massive, open, online courses (MOOCs) for applied hospitality and tourism work settings. We contend that the growth of MOOCs provides several opportunities for companies to expand their training and development efforts, and that MOOCs can support a wide array of learning initiatives that promote engagement, continuous improvement, and professional growth. However, while traditional models can evaluate impact, several unique features associated with MOOCs necessitate a broader and more contextually specific evaluation scheme. As such, this proposed framework considers those content and design features that are particularly relevant to MOOCs, and identifies additional criteria that can evaluate the current and future utility of this unique learning platform.
