Abstract

The objects of the study have been information science institutes of the following universities: Humboldt-University Berlin, Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf, Karl- Franzens-University Graz, University of Hildesheim and University of Regensburg. More than 1,000 publications from official publication lists of the personnel employed at the institutes have been taken as data for the elicitation for the time between 2003 and the end of 2012. The number of publications for each author as well as for each institute, document types, the coverage of the publications in scientific databases, citations of these, and the h-index of each author have been considered for the analysis. The chosen scientific databases are Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, Mendeley, CiteULike and BibSonomy. Occurring defects in these databases are recorded precisely in the study and are subject of the analysis. The investigated institutes are compared in relation to the raised data in terms of the coverage of the publication lists in the selected databases, the productivity as well as the scientific impact of the respective institutes. © 2014 by Walter de Gruyter Berlin/Boston 2014.
