Abstract

We address critically the problem of detection of black holes. We note that the body of observational evidence obtained so far from black hole candidates is based almost entirely on the mass measurement criteria. This, in terms of proof, provides a necessary and yet insufficient condition. We analyse some more convincing strategies for obtaining the signature of a black hole, stressing the importance of considering observable effects in relation with possible space missions.
