Abstract

The effect of fatty acids on bilirubin conjugation was studied. Unsaturated fatty acids containing 18 to 20 carbon atoms decreased the rate of conjugation in rat liver slices and microsomes, probably by inhibiting glucuronyl transferase. Since fatty acids may be an important source of energy for the young infant, the relation of these findings to breast milk jaundice is discussed.
