This article invites the reader to explore teaching as a life-a way of being and doing that constructs who we are. Passages from Annie Dillard's The Writing Life begin a meditation on the ideals and realities of teaching and suggest that a teaching life can be constructed as an artist's life, with its freedom to invent a task and select materials and its necessity to take risk. © 1997 Sage Publication, Inc.
