Abstract

No evidence was found for upwelling of deep Antarctic water in the lee of the Prince Edward Islands in the S Indian Ocean. This is emphasized by a comparison of thermoclinal slopes in the lee of Prince Edward Island and of Marion Island. Support also comes from surface contours of reactive nitrate, P, Si and chlorophyll-a concentrations which decrease with distance from the islands. These contours suggest that primary productivity in the sea around the islands is locally enhanced through 'island mass effect'.-from Authors
