Abstract

To present reference intervals of stabilometry in clinical practice, stabilometry data were collected from healthy subjects national wide . Stabilometry was carried out using Anima's stabilometer G5500 . Each subject was requested to stand on the stabilometer with the feet close together. Body sway while standing upright was recorded for 60 seconds and stored on a floppy disc. Each exami- nation was carried out with eyes open and then with eyes closed. On the collected data , various stabilometry parameters were measured and statistical studies were performed . 1 Stabilometry findings of 2201 healthy subjects (1013 male and 1188 female) were obtained from 17 different facilities across the country from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Sub- jects ranged from 3 to 94 years old . 2 Using the collected data, area, locus length, locus length per second, locus length per unit area, deviation of the body's center of gravity in the X- and Y-axes and Rom- berg ratio were determined. 3 In statistical studies of the collected data, there were no differences between facili- ties. Differences between males and females were significant at the 5% level . 4 For the above tested items, average values, standard deviations, reference inter- (average ± 2 × standard vals deviation) and approximate values obtained from second order regression curve were presented for male and female subjects grouped by age at 5 year intervals from 0-4.9 to 86-89.9 years old. In conclusion , reference intervals were considered useful for evaluating measured values of various parameters obtained from stabilometry in clinical practice .
