In this introductory chapter we begin our exploration of foraging by emphasizing the diversity and complexity of life on earth and by defining what we mean by foraging. We then explore the general factors which impact on an organism’s choice of foraging strategy. This naturally leads to a discussion of how the combination of these factors and the choice of foraging strategy produces a distribution of foraging ‘payoffs’.
