Abstract

Comprehensive medical coverage is an essential piece of a basketball team, and requires multidisciplinary cooperation to successfully address the various needs of the involved athletes. While the scope of a medical team varies based on level of play, physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, and other treatment specialists all play a role in keeping athletes on the court. The medical team should be able to address acute and chronic injuries and illnesses, sideline emergencies, rehabilitation, return to play, and preventative care of the athlete. In addition, the medical team must make sure to maintain adequate facilities, equipment, and personnel to meet these needs, and keep all involved members oriented and up to date on appropriate action plans.
