Abstract

In this study, a new segmentation algorithm based on a modified Dynamic Window-based gray-level Run-Length Coding (DW-RLC) applied to neighboring pixels is proposed. The method is applied to gray scale images, RGB color images, and images in the HLS color space. The proposed algorithm, which has a fast image segmentation performance from the experiments, can be categorized as a region growing method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has several advantages in segmenting images. © Springer-Verlag 2003.
