Abstract

In this paper, we propose QCast, a DHT-based QoS-aware P2P streaming system. Nodes first self-organize into a DHT overlay. A simple and effective method is used to accommodate as many nodes into the distribution trees as possible. Also, we use an ID assignment method based on the QoS requirements of nodes and a buffering technology to provide QoS support. We show on the example of Pastry how to implement such a QoS-aware P2P streaming system. Simulation shows that most of the end-to-end paths in the multicast trees fulfill the bandwidth QoS requirements in this system, and the average packet loss rate is reduced effectively, both of which are usually not the cases for traditional P2P streaming systems. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
