Abstract

Economic models that shift the focus to long-lasting products and the extension of their period of use have gained significance as sustainable alternatives to present-day production and consumption patterns. In this article the expectations of consumers, their product-specific usage practices and their motives for ending product use are analysed based on the results of an empirical study in Austrian households. It is discussed what significance a longer period of use would have for consumers and which policy measures could promote longevity.
