Abstract

Three novel closed-cycle processes for the thermochemical production of hydrogen from water are under study at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The first cycle is based upon selenium and its compounds, the second on mercury, and the third on methane and methanol. None of these cycles involves halogens, and reaction temperatures are limited to 700 degree C. Although still in the conceptual stages, some preliminary experiments have been conducted on the first two processes, with the main effort on the first process.
