Abstract

We present a novel method of volume removal for deformable mesh data. The proposed method has the advantages of both volumetric mesh removal technique and hexahedral mesh deformation. Barycentric mapping combines the volumetric mesh for carving and the hexahedral mesh for deformation. The proposed algorithm for carving the deformable mesh is applied to a laparoscopic surgery training virtual simulation of gallbladder removal. In order to simulate the procedure of identifying the cystic duct and cystic artery by fat tissue removal, carving mesh with deformation is applied. This paper introduces mesh-processing algorithms to implement volume removal of soft tissue in detail. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
