The aim of this research is to understand the difficulties/obstacles and factors inhibiting learning faced by fifth grade students in elementary schools. The research method used is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research consisted of 30 fifth grade students in one of the elementary schools in Tasikmalaya. Data collection techniques are carried out through interviews, tests and documentation. The test instrument used to identify learning barriers consists of five essay questions in the form of stories. The results of the research show that students' difficulties in solving algebra problems are caused by several factors, including: 1) students' difficulties or obstacles in understanding the meaning of the questions, 2) students' difficulties or obstacles in formulating mathematical sentences from the context of the questions given, and 3) difficulties or obstacles in solving problems contained in algebra story problems correctly.
