Abstract

New Zealand has been an important center for research on hydrothermal systems ever since exploration at Wairakei began shortly after the end of World War II. Investigation of these systems continues today, in an effort to improve further and test models which have become rather firmly established in the last few years. The goal of this field conference is to familiarize participants with the geologic, hydrologic and chemical features of hydrothermal systems. Specific attention will be focussed on the processes that influence alteration and mineralization in the epithermal environment. This guide describes the hydrothermal features associated with active and extinct hydrothermal systems of the North Island, New Zealand. (auth/EB)
