Abstract

To the ancients, the sky was a source of power that drove the seasons and ordered theworld. Astronomical observation provided access to celestial power. The character of those observations, the use to which they were put, and a culture's brokerage of the sky's power were primarily functions of latitude, climate, and social complexity.
