Abstract

The scope of this article is to conduct a critical analysis from the perspective of Public Health of the first item of the Rio +20 Summit agenda: "A green economy in the context of sustainable development and the eradication of poverty." Methodologically, the analysis was performed through two converging approaches: (a) argumentative - by means of a dialectical analysis of facts and reports produced during the process; and (b) pragmatic - an analysis of the socioenvironmental profile of the current twenty major economies in the world, using indicators found in international agency databases. The results suggest that the greatest environmental pressure on natural resources is not poverty, as understood by the dominant agenda, but the historically determined models of production.
