Abstract

[argues that] brief intervention with adolescents who are suffering from adjustment disorders can and must involve an understanding of how the social system was relevant in the etiology of the presenting problems / [shows that] social systems can be successfully utilized to become therapeutic aspects of the treatment plan / [describes] the five stages of social support intervention [which] are ventilation, assessment, clarification, planning, and restructuring / brief social support system intervention is ideally suited to adolescents because it helps to develop five resources that are particularly important to them at this life stage [specifically, sense of self, encouragement and positive feedback, protection against stress, knowledge and skills, and socialization opportunities] / [illustrates these issues by two case examples, of a 14-yr-old suicidal female and of a 17-yr-old male with disorderly behavior] (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: chapter)
