Abstract

This chapter analyses the experience of social suffering endured by indigenous and Afro-Colombian populations in Colombia despite the extensive legal framework established by the Colombian constitution and Law 70 to promote their recognition. In The Theory of Recognition and Multicultural Policies in Colombia and New Zealand. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-59426-8stitutional project before scrutinising the challenges and contradictions of indigenous recognition in the following three areas: indigenous land rights and political autonomy, indigenous political participation within Colombia’s democratic institutions and indigenous welfare policies (particularly the differentiated indigenous health care systems). The chapter also analyses the challenges related to Afro-Colombian recognition in the areas of land rights and political autonomy, participation within Colombia’s democratic institutions and welfare policies (particularly policies against racism and for the preservation of Afro-Colombian culture). The five key issues with “identity politics” identified in Chap. 3are highlighted when relevant.
