Abstract

This paper relates a case study involving Current Transformers (CTs) from the electrical system of the Companhia Hidro Elétrica do São Francisco (CHESF) in order to estimate the optimum number of spare. Two models have been considered in this work. The first and widely used in sparing analyses consists of an application of the Poisson distribution to calculate the reliability of a system. The second is based on Monte Carlo simulation, in which any probability distribution and stochastic times can be used. The comparison between models has shown that the Monte Carlo model is more efficient due to its stochastic nature. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
