The work of Germán Berrios is recognized throughout the world for its epistemological, historical, and psychopathological ideas. There has not yet been a review of his academic beginnings, a subject that we consider important, because these were critical to the development of his prolific thinking. In this paper, we review his thesis 'Problemas de Psiquiatría Contemporánea' ('Problems of Contemporary Psychiatry'), in which he addressed various ideas that have been fundamental to his academic work – the epistemology of psychiatry and its objects of study, the historical analysis of psychiatric theories, and the relationship between politics and psychiatry – all within the context of the various problems faced by psychiatry in the 1960s.
