The Lagoon Rodrigo de Freitas (LRF) is an aquatic ecosystem with high ecological, social and economic importance for Rio de Janeiro City. The aim of this article was to evaluate possible alterations that can influence the LRF within the next years, as a consequence of the antropic impacts and climatic changes. This article discuss potential problems that can influence the LRF. This aquatic environment should not be seen under a preservationist, but on a social-urban perspective. Among the anthropogenic impacts that affect the LRF, we highlight the wastewater input, that should be completely suspended. As the sediment of LRF accumulates large amounts of nutrients, this environment will probably present eutrophic characteristics for many years. Due to this perspective, there is a need for an intervention that can promote an increase the water exchange between the LRF and the sea. In addition to these actions, the government needs to monitor and prevent the occupation of new areas and restore deforested areas in the drainage basin of the LRF and also to adapt to future climate changes that will certainly affect the LRF.
