Abstract

Since the time of ‘Enlightenment’ the term modernity carried something positive, new and exciting that most people could easily relate to, being motivated to help building the new brave world for future generations. These concepts have currently reached an end, judged by all metrics, certainly when looking at environmental ones and for the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. There are many problems that do not allow to reach the lofty goals of the west such as every human being is equal and everybody has the same rights. Instead, devastation, decay and generic poverty rule, natural resources are widely used up, and space and wealth is limited. Here some examples are shown how this western governance model failed, and that a new, better system is needed to reach global sustainability goals.
