Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) enables the MRI visualization of molecular movements of water in biological tissues. Molecular diffusion in vivo reflects interactions with macromolecules, fibres and membranes. Water molecule diffusion patterns can therefore reveal microscopic details about tissue architecture that cannot be appreciated otherwise. The present chapter explains the technical background of this MRI technique and its wide clinical applications.
