Care activities in all its forms, unpaid and paid, are a necessary, yet rarely recognized social resource for any sustainable societal development. This social resource can be depleted and destroyed by socio-political frameworks which ignore its relevance. The article defines work and the societal organization of work as key concepts of sustainable development. It outlines recent trends towards a new international division of domestic care work by migrant workers as a consequence of the hegemonic political economy and policies at the global level and in Europe; it describes international and transnational political initiatives to overcome exploitative employment relationship particularly with respect to migrant domestic workers. The implementation challenges of these human rights-based approaches are discussed considering particularly the German context. © Lucius & Lucius.
