Abstract

The development of herbaceous vegetation after clear felling is described, basd on studies in France. Herbicide treatment delays colonization or temporarily reduces herbaceous cover, and may alter the types and proportions of species present. A fertilizer and herbicide trial in a beech stand with Deschampsia flexuosa showed that treatment with glyphosate + atrazine alone had a rapid effect, but D. flexuosa recovered quickly. Ca or NPKCa fertilizer combined with herbicide, or Ca fertilizer alone, were more effective in the long term. A review of several studies showed the detrimental effects of herbaceous vegetation on re-establishment and growth of transplanted seedlings.
