Abstract

Most engineering graduates hope to progress either into a graduate job or higher study such as a PhD. The experience, and fact, of the dissertation provides valuable material and learning to support either of these, both in applications and when starting work. When pursuing a professional engineering job, the dissertation may have built up useful contacts, and provided enhanced knowledge of an industry sector or particular role. If applying for a PhD the dissertation also provides specific evidence of the ability to produce independent research and writing about a topic: a vital requirement of any prospective PhD research student. In commencing a new role, used well, the learning from the dissertation can also give a head start in skill and knowledge.
